history: Van was born the second prince of Fanelia to Goau Fanel and Varie, several years behind his older brother Folken. Because of his mother’s Draconian* blood, Van was born with the ability to summon wings for almost as long as he could remember, like his brother before him. He had very close relationships with his mother and brother in particular, but he lost them all at a young age. It began with his father, who passed away presumably from illness. Then, when Folken left for the right of dragon slaying in order to become Fanelia’s king, he failed to return and was presumed dead. For a long time Van was the only one who truly believed that Folken had died fighting bravely, despite the continued gossip of his failure to slay the dragon and that he didn’t return out of cowardice. Soon after this happened, his mother left Fanelia to search for her wayward son, leaving Van in the care of Balgus (who would become Van’s teacher, mentor and essentially his father-figure). Varie also failed to return and is presumed dead.

While growing up, Van learned the ways of the sword from Balgus, although one thing he had always been told by the other was that he was too hesitant and gentle. Despite those chidings, they continued to bond and Van grew with the love of his friends and the support of every citizen in his kingdom.

When he turned fifteen, he was deemed ready to take the trial of dragon slaying in order to ascend Fanelia’s throne. During the brutal fight, however, Van and the dragon both were transported to the Mystic Moon, which most would call Earth. That was when he met the mysterious girl, Hitomi Kanzaki.

The destined encounter involved the girl displaying an otherworldly power and, with her warning of the dragon’s attack, he managed to slay it and remove what he was after, the drag-energist* residing in its heart. Once this was completed, he was returned to Gaea (Van’s home world) with the energist* and unexpected company, that being Hitomi.

Once the two were found they were taken back to Fanelia and Van’s coronation ceremony began, officially naming him Fanelia’s king. During the ceremony however, chaos erupted as Fanelia was attacked by invisible guymelefs*, who they found out were from the Zaibach Empire. With the energist he had won from the dragon, Van travelled to the castle’s depths and awoke the Escaflowne, a guymelef known as Fanelia’s treasure. During the conflict, Balgus died trying to protect Van and Hitomi, the two forced to flee with nothing but the clothes on their backs, Escaflowne, and their lives.

The next few months were spent meeting many new allies and enemies, fighting the Zaibach Empire at almost every turn, making shocking discoveries about the world around them and themselves, and trying to restore the fallen country of Fanelia. Throughout this journey Van found his brother again, alive and an enemy for a long time, and he found love within the mysterious girl Hitomi, although for months he was unable to recognize it as such. He also learned how to sense unseen enemies and predict their movements through clairvoyance from Hitomi, and over time vowed that he would fell any enemy if it meant that he could protect her.

At the final battle, when Zaibach finally fell, all hell broke loose and all of the allied nations began to war, even pitting Van against his rival and friend, Allen Schezar. But hearing Hitomi’s heart during the fight prompted him to stop and he stepped out of the guymelef, letting his wings burst from his back and flying towards where he knew Hitomi to be. With the sight of him soaring through the sky, this somehow prompted the fighting to stop and therefore ended an imminent new war before it could truly begin.

Once this was over, they returned to Fanelia and Van removed the energist from the Escaflowne, saying that it was not needed and it would be better if it remained asleep during the times of peace. After sharing one final embrace with Hitomi, he was given her pendant and watched her return to the Mystic Moon with a sad smile, vowing to always keep her in his heart even if they couldn’t see each other anymore.

He returned to lead the restoration of Fanelia once she departed, and continued to do so until, one night, he woke up to find himself in a cold and dark space with nothing but a strange black device on his chest...

*Escaflowne Wiki’s Glossary of Terms

personality: Van, although officially the ruler of his country, is a young boy and acts how most would expect any teenager his age to act; he is impulsive, rash, arrogant, moody, temperamental and stubborn. He also tends to be mistrustful of people upon first meeting them and is consequently fairly introverted, although that could be a reflection of how people treat him for his lineage should they know exactly what he is. As such, social gatherings and being around too many unfamiliar faces in general is enough to make him uncomfortable with his surroundings.

He also has very set beliefs of honor and loyalty, and is willing to go as far as sacrificing his life for a cause he strongly believes in. However, even through his stubbornness and pride Van can be convinced to take a different course of action if he’s shown that his current course will end fruitlessly. Even more important to him than his own honor and ideals are the people he cares about, and for them he would give anything just to help make sure that they remain safe from any harm.

Although Van has trouble with words, he won’t hesitate to act if he thinks he can do something to help. If one of his friends is in danger, he will work tirelessly and do everything he possibly can to assist. This devotion is nearly blind, resulting in him not taking anyone’s personal comfort into account while he’s trying to help them. Unfortunately his trouble with speaking and expressing himself has gotten him into trouble on more than one occasion. He will often say things he doesn’t mean, brushing off pure emotions with tagged on excuses for why they’re there and snapping at people who may generally wish to help him. It’s only one of the reasons why he has trouble connecting with others, even if he’s known them for a long period of time.

Beneath the rash nature and quick temper, Van has a gentle and kind heart that almost never fails to show itself. Even as a child he never saw the reason for pointlessly taking life, and even though he has more than enough skill to take down almost any adversary he has faced, his hesitance to take another’s life has often lead his downfall. There are times when his kindness can fall to pure rage and he will stop at nothing to ensure his enemy’s destruction, and he is no longer the pure child he was having learned what it’s like to take a life. But, even now his heart still resonates strong with his need to help others and he has a strong dislike for unnecessary violence (even though he will fight if he feels he has to).

abilities/powers: Flight: Van, ever since he was a child, has had the ability to sprout fully-functioning white wings from his back due to his mother’s Draconian bloodline. These wings also emit a soft white glow, although not nearly enough to provide proper illumination for his surroundings.* Although he doesn’t use them often, they are strong enough for him to fly both by himself and with the strength to carry one other person while flying, presumably of similar size and weight to him. He has the ability to make this wings appear and disappear at will, and they will fade into nothing when he chooses to hide them again.
Swordplay: Van is skilled in using a katana-type sword, having been trained since he was young by the famed master swordsman Balgus. However, although he is incredibly skilled, he tends to rush blindly when angered and will otherwise stay his hand from delivering a finishing blow to an opponent (due to his over-all gentle nature), something that his opponents often take advantage of.
Endurance: Although not outside of the realms of what a human being can withstand, Van has been known to use his body to fight while only being forced to move with sheer willpower. He has also taken the equivalent of terrible torture while severely injured when the Escaflowne needed to be repaired, nearly dying from the pain alone but surviving in the end.

first person sample:

[The video feed suddenly clicks on to show a darkened corridor, with mannequins showing up with the soft illumination from the phone. There’s someone breathing hard behind it too, and eventually the view on the phone rises up into the air, stopping and shifting to show a shirtless and mildly injured Van.

What are these creatures attacking them? His heart is still racing, not only from being forced to flee but from having no means to defend himself against the creatures pursuing him. Feeling this powerless was visibly aggravating him, but even more painful for him is that he knows there’s nothing he can do about it.

A few button presses later and the feed clicks off for most of the residents, shifting to a private feed for a select few. Most of his friends and allies weren’t unfortunate enough to end up in Abax, but he couldn’t be sure of the safety of the new friends he’d made. If nothing else, he could take them some place where the mannequins couldn't reach...]

Is everyone all right? Where are you?

[He’s tense, trying to listen intently to the phone for a reply even as the creatures around him continue to try and reach him from wherever he’s managed to perch himself. He might have been hurt and tired, but he had to ensure their well being. If anything happened to them...

But, as several long seconds pass in silence, his eyes widen with his growing anxiety. They couldn’t be... Dead, could they? He almost shouts into the phone’s mic as he starts to panic.]
Answer me! Where are you!?

third person sample:

The night was quiet and the air was still, something he was sure he hadn’t felt in a long time. Not since before the war began, even though it had ended a while ago.

He couldn’t help sighing as he sat on one of the newly restored roofs of Fanelia’s castle, his eyes opening to view the stars and two moons above. Even though the restoration of the kingdom had been keeping him busy... He couldn’t help but think of her.

A gloved hand raised to grasp the beautiful red pendant hanging around his neck and, although it brought back some of his fonder memories to mind, it did little to ease the ache of his heart. There were so many things he wanted to say to her, but it wasn’t anything that either of them didn’t already know. Hitomi knew, and he knew how she felt. Things had to turn out the way they did because they came from two separate worlds. Even so... He couldn’t help his desire to be with her again.

Another sigh, and a smile appeared on his face. Even if he couldn’t see her before him, he still had the memories of her to accompany him. He still had all of his other friends too, and they all missed her as well. He could reminisce later... For now, though, he had to focus on returning Fanelia to its former glory. Maybe then he could find a way to have her return to Gaea again.
